A Growing Market Running on Chaos
India's creator marketing industry is estimated to be heading toward ₹4,000 crore by end of 2026, based on projections from EY and Kofluence's 2025 industry reports. Three out of four Indian brands are reported to include creator marketing in their strategy. And yet the infrastructure behind this market remains, in many cases, remarkably primitive.
Deals are done over WhatsApp. Budgets are tracked in Excel. Payment terms are agreed verbally. And when something goes wrong — and it does — there is often no platform, no process, and no clear protection for either party.
What Running a Collaboration Actually Looks Like
Here is what a typical brand-creator collaboration can look like in India today, outside of structured platforms:
Brand contacts creator via DM or email
Often cold, often with no verifiable company information. The creator has limited ways to verify whether the brand is legitimate.
Rate negotiation happens informally
No standard format. No written brief. Terms are agreed on a call or in a chat thread that nobody archives.
Creator shares bank account details informally
Bank account numbers and IFSC codes sent over Instagram DMs or WhatsApp — sensitive information with no security layer.
Creator creates content without payment confirmation
Often without a formal brief, without knowing if payment is secured. On trust alone.
Creator sends an invoice
Usually a PDF from a free template, often without correct GST or TDS structure.
Payment arrives — eventually, if at all
Industry participants report delays of 30 to 90 days being common, with some reporting non-payment after content delivery. Creators typically have limited practical recourse.
Industry context: Based on publicly available creator surveys and industry reports, payment delays and non-payment after content delivery are among the most frequently cited grievances in the Indian creator economy. GigTryst is built to address these structurally — not just anecdotally.
Three Core Problems
Problem 1: No Payment Protection
When a creator delivers content and a brand delays or declines payment, the creator's practical options are limited. Legal action against a brand over a small collaboration fee is rarely cost-effective. Creators tend to absorb the loss. This creates a power imbalance that, over time, can undermine the quality and sustainability of the ecosystem.
Problem 2: No Performance Visibility
Brands typically pay based on follower count — a metric that can be inflated and tells limited information about commercial impact. A creator who drives meaningful sales through affiliate content is, in most current arrangements, indistinguishable on paper from one who drives none. Without attribution infrastructure, brands pay for reach rather than results.
Problem 3: Compliance Gaps
When brands pay creators directly, tax obligations around TDS and GST apply — obligations that many participants, particularly smaller brands and independent creators, may be unaware of or unequipped to handle. This creates compliance exposure that can surface later during audits or filings.
Without a Platform
- Verbal agreements, limited record
- Payment timing uncertain
- Tax obligations unmanaged
- No attribution data
- Creator has limited protection
With GigTryst (designed to)
- Confirmed deal terms, both parties
- Payment secured before work starts
- TDS handled at content approval
- Conversion data tracked via Barter++*
- Structured process for both parties
*Barter++ is GigTryst's affiliate income model — explained in detail in a separate article.
Why Hasn't Anyone Solved This?
Several platforms operate in this space — including Influish, Collancer, and others — and each addresses parts of the problem. What has not existed until now is a single platform that combines payment protection, tax compliance infrastructure, and performance attribution in one transaction engine. Building a booking interface is relatively straightforward. Building compliant escrow, TDS deduction, and GMV tracking simultaneously is the harder problem — and the one GigTryst is focused on.
GigTryst's focus: Combining structured payment protection, automatic compliance handling, and Barter++ performance tracking in one platform — designed to serve both creators and brands who want a more professional, protected way to collaborate.
