Three Metrics, Three Different Things

Creator metrics exist on a spectrum from easy-to-measure to commercially meaningful. Understanding what each one actually tells you helps both brands and creators use them more honestly.

Follower Count

Tells you how many people have chosen to follow an account at some point. It does not tell you whether those followers are active, whether they match a target demographic, or whether they have ever purchased anything a creator recommended. Follower count is the most widely used filter in creator marketing and, arguably, the least predictive of commercial outcomes. It is also the easiest to inflate.

Engagement Rate

A better signal. Engagement rate — typically calculated as (likes + comments + meaningful shares) ÷ reach — tells you whether the creator's audience is actively interested in their content. High engagement suggests an audience that pays attention. It does not directly tell you whether that attention translates to purchases. A creator with a highly engaged audience in a low-purchase-intent category may not convert better than one with lower engagement in a category where their audience actively buys.

Conversion Rate

The conversion rate on a Barter++ campaign is the closest signal to actual commercial performance. The formula GigTryst uses: attributed orders ÷ link clicks × 100. A creator who consistently converts a meaningful percentage of link clicks to purchases has demonstrated something about their audience's relationship with their recommendations that follower count and engagement rate alone cannot show.

Important limitation: GigTryst's conversion rate calculation has a known gap — promo code orders generate no link click, so the denominator undercounts one attribution channel while the numerator includes both. The displayed rate may therefore overstate pure link-based conversion. We flag this transparently. It remains more informative than no performance data, but should be interpreted with this in mind.

Formula: Conversion Rate = (Attributed orders ÷ Tracking link clicks) × 100

How This Builds Over Time

Each completed Barter++ campaign contributes data to a creator's profile. Over multiple campaigns, patterns emerge — which categories convert well for their audience, what types of content drive the highest click-through, what time of year performs best. This data belongs to the creator and is designed to be visible to brands evaluating them for future collaborations.

For brands, a creator with a documented conversion rate across multiple campaigns in a relevant category provides a more grounded basis for rate negotiation than follower count alone. For creators, this data can support asking for higher royalty rates on future Barter++ deals — provided the data supports the ask.

Using Conversion Rate in Negotiation

For creators: "My conversion rate across completed GigTryst campaigns in this category is X% — above the category average based on available benchmarks" is a more defensible negotiating position than "my audience really engages with product recommendations." Use data you have; do not extrapolate from too few data points.

For brands: conversion rate is a useful filter when evaluating creators for Barter++ deals, but apply appropriate caution. A high rate on one campaign in a different category may not predict performance in yours. Look for creators with conversion data specifically relevant to your product category where possible.
